Race 6 - Kirby Hill

A win for VC Briganti's Matt Mannakee. Race report by fith placed Steve Hodgson.

A fairly low turnout this evening maybe due to blustery weather but groups were
decided by Cliff: quite a large first group, only 4 riders in the 2nd group and
6 in the scratch group with a 4.5min gap between group 1 and scratch. A gulp
from the scratch riders was met with a "You'll catch them fine, don't worry"
from Mr Beldon. Oh yes, like the last few weeks when the scratch group have
never got back on terms.

The scratch group worked well together from the off and after the 2nd lap of 6
caught some stragglers from the 1st group. All riders in the scratch group were
pulling their weight but Barry Mordue, Matt Mannakkee and Carl Saint were
without doubt the men to watch; James Gullen was also doing some powerful turns
on the front.

By lap 4 all groups were together, the ill-fated middle group not lasting very
long in the windy conditions with so few riders. It was also on lap 4 when
Giles Pidcock decided his bike weighed too much and ditched his saddle, then realised how painful it was to ride without one so he abandoned. Hard luck
Giles.

So the race was now on proper and Barry Mordue and Matt Mannakkee were keen to
get away, but finding it difficult to make the move with the rest of the bunch
desperate to keep things together. But eventually on lap 5 the elastic snapped
and they broke away leaving Carl Saint, James Gullen, John Oldridge and Steve
Hodgson working hard back in the bunch to bring them back, but to no avail.

The dynamic duo opened up a gap of about 30 metres which they maintained
throughout the final lap. Even a huge solo breakaway effort by Time Trial
powerhouse Carl Saint failed to bridge tha gap and the bunch started to get
fidgetty ready for the final sprint for 3rd place. The Team Chevin riders were
dominant in numbers and were looking good at the back end of the final lap,
seemingly building up ready to led out their star rider to the finish line.

A last ditch effort by Ian Mitchelson of Hambleton Road Club came to nothing and
as Matt Mannakkee took the win in great style after a cagey finishing straight,
Barry Mordue took 2nd, with James Gullen beating Carl Saint into 4th and Steve
Hodgson unable to overtake Carl and being content with 5th.

A busy evening for the marshalls with the huge puddle on the back straight but
no problems with any traffic and the event went smoothly. See you on the 17th
July for the Aldborough circuit.
